Skip Counting in 2s

For Maths today we were practising our skip counting in 2s.  We used children to help us skip count.  First of all we counted eyes, then legs
and then we counted hands

and then shoulders.

We looked at some videos on you tube. They are Have Fun Teaching :Counting by 2s Song and Whatcha' Gonna Do? (Count by 2s).

Our First Science Discovery Day

On Friday we had a whole Discovery Day doing Science.
First we started in our own classes.  We were looking at snails and wanted to find out which surface the snails like best.  Each person had a snail and we worked in pairs moving around the different surfaces with our same snail.  We had paper, rock, sandpaper, wood and carpet to try. Here are some videos of what we found out.

In Room 1 we were investigating what plants need to grow. We planted watercress in egg shells.  WE watered these and put one of these in the cupboard and we had another one that we don't water.
In Room3 we were investigating how plants get their food.  We put celery intothe 3 containers - one red, one blue and one purple.
In Room 14 we were looking at an ant farm.  We saw the Queen bee.

South School Pet Day 2013 - Morning

On Monday South School held a Pet Day. In the morning there was a lamb and calf competition. Eva, Olivia and Ged all brought their lambs and Room 2 went down and had a look. We got to pat the lamb and some calves.

Ipads Today

Today in our ipad time we were learning how to take a video.  We worked with a partner and took a video of each other.  Then we looked at all the videos we had taken.  Mrs. Bone hopes some of us will be able to take some little video clips of our Science Discovery Days.

A couple of people showed their video clips to Room 1 and 14.

Cricket

Today we had some people from Manawatu Cricket and Natasha from Sport Tararua, come and teach us some cricket skills.  We learnt how to catch the ball, how to hold a bat and how to bat.  Everyone took a note home about cricket.  If anyone wants to play cricket it is held on Thursday nights and you can register in Thursdy at the Domain.

Grasshopper Tennis

This week we had Kurt take us for tennis. We were able to be outside. First of all we played with the ball and the racket and then we got to hit the ball over the net.

After play everyone had a choice of making sandsaucers, rock art or flax flowers. Every child in the school had to participate. After we had finished our creations we took them to the hall to be judged. We also had a best dressed teddybear competition which Jack's teddy bear won. People also brought their caged pets, dogs, and there was even a turtle!

Here are some of our wonderful stories - read some of them in our school newsletter this week.

Fractions

For the first two weeks of this term we are studying fractions.
On Wednesday we cut oranges into halves so we had 2 equal parts.

Then we cut the orange into 4 equal parts.  Each part is called a quarter.

On Thursday some children came and said that their fruit snack was cut into quarters.
For Maths on Thursday we looked at half of a set.  Olivia used koalas and leaves to find out that half of 6 is 3.  Mason and James used multilink cubes and Eva used beans to find that 7 is half of 14 .

You could help me work out half a set at home using things around the house and sharing them with 2 people.
Today (Friday) we made sandwiches and cut them into halves and then quarters.

We could have cut them into triangles as well and we would still have had 2 equal parts or halves and 4 equal parts or quarters.
When we went to the computer suite we had to insert shapes that could be cut into halves. This is    some of our work that Mrs. Bone has put up on the wall.  Come in and have a look at our work.

When we had finished this we played some fraction games on the computer called Half/Not a Half and Half/Not a Quarter.  You might like to try them at home as well at http://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=Fractionsv

Wet Day Lunchtime

Today we had a wet day at school so we had to eat our lunch inside and play inside.  Here are some of the things we got up to.

Grasshopper Tennis

Today we had our first session of Grasshopper tennis.  We got to bounce the ball on our racquets and to hit it along the ground to a partner.  We threw the ball to each other and we had some relays.  Cameron came from Palmerston North to teach us.  We had to be in the hall because it was wet. We are going to have four sessions of tennis.  Hopefully it will be fine next week so we can go outside!

Tate's Story: We went to the hall.  We played with the tennis balls.
Eva's Story: I was batting the ball and after we rolled the ball.  I had Paige for my partner and it was fun.
Aymon's Story: I went to the grasshopper tennis in the hall.  I liked it.
George's Story: I am batting the ball.  My partner is Dani.
Dyllin's Story: Jack throwed the ball to me.  We had fun.
